The once iconic Camper is likely to be revived and built again. According to Auto Express, the Camper will return with a retro look and less options that will help keep costs down.
The Microbus concept which Volkswagen revealed at the Detroit Motor Show in 2001 may well provide a platform for the new Camper. VW had announced in 2005 that the Microbus will not make it to production due to high costs, but now, the company is exploring ways to make it economically feasible. Teaming up with VW is British rock group ‘The Who’, they definitely want to see the camper coming back. The group used Camper as transport in their early days and recently performed at the 60th birthday bash of the model apparently are very fond of the vehicle. The group went in discussion with top VW officials from Germany and UK after their performance at the birthday celebrations.
Guitarist Pete Townshend said that he still has an old VW bus in his garage, and it is likely that he be among the first to own the new Camper. The new vehicle is likely to be called Bulli and produced in the USA, perhaps as a part of the company’s plan to boost sales in the North American market. VW officials concede that if 100,000 units of the vehicle are not sold each year, it will not be financially viable.
