After a small round of teasers, Volvo has unveiled the S60 Concept. Set for a debut at Detroit in January, the car is expected to go into production by 2010. The car features a fresh design for both, the interior and the exterior. The coupe-like design has a lot to show for it’s Scandinavian influence. The V-shaped bonnet is flanked by angled headlamps; the headlamps themselves are a bit unique as they carry two Viking longboats. Images of two Viking longboats sailing side by side appear from the LED lamps, one image for the main beam, and the other for the dipped beam. Doors on the concept have been designed for awesomeness, the rear parallelogram doors are opened on a push of a button. As the button is pressed, the door starts opening in the conventional way, and then moves to the second phase where it glides parallel with the side of the car to reach the rear of the car.
Interiors of the concept are futuristic and neat. The earlier released image of the floating centre stack gave a taste of what was to come. Then there are the leather seats and armrest, and a 3D speedometer that gives an animated approach to the speed of the car; with numbers moving closer at slow speeds and into the distance at higher speeds.
And what would a Volvo be without added safety features? A system in the car notices any pedestrians that may come in the car’s path, and pulls the brakes if the driver does not. A collision warning with full auto brake is initiated when necessary. The four cylinder 1.6-l petrol engine produces 180hp and with the use of Volvo’s new GTDi technology, manages to lower the emissions to about 119g/km.
