Steam Powered car races across the century old speed record
Harshpaul | Aug 26 2009

The British steam powered race car has met success in setting record for the fastest steam powered car. And it’s about time that someone went past the previous record of 127.659 mph that was set way back in 1906. This steam powered car, driven by Charles Burnett III clocked an average speed of 139.843 mph.

Going past the longest standing land speed record wasn’t an easy task, the team’s hard work of more than 10 years paid of today with the successful run. Rules require the team to complete two runs in opposite directions, and it is the average speed of these runs that is actually considered. The record is currently awaiting confirmation from Federation Internationale d’Automobile, whose officials were present at the spot, so the confirmation probably will come quick.
