Speed bumps to sense the health of a car
Harshpaul | Apr 18 2009

Finally, something that speed bumps are good for. The system has been developed to keep Humvees of the US Army in perfect shape. Embedded sensors in these speed bumps compare vibration signatures of the passing vehicles to the signatures of a “healthy vehicle” in order to pinpoint any fault. Developed by researchers at the Purdue University, the speed bump costs only $1500 and can lead to cost effectiveness.

Humvees up for different tasks can all be monitored with ease and greater accuracy, making maintenance easier and providing a better option to the regular scheduled maintenance. This could in fact be better than the regular maintenance as vehicles are subject to different tasks, some more demanding than the others. The next step for researchers is to have enough data of vibration signatures to effectively handle most of the problems.
