The record-setting flight of the SkySpark was a big one for clean energy airplanes, and what the Solar Impulse wants to do is another big shot. Bertrand Piccard wants to take this solar energy powered plane on a flight around the globe, making it the first ever solar powered plane to achieve this feat. The Solar Impulse will go on a test run later this year, where it is likely to fly for two days, including the night; powered entirely by solar energy.
To capture the required solar energy, the plane has a wingspan of 200 feet, and is covered in 12000 solar cells. To keep the Solar Impulse lightweight, its body is mainly composed of carbon fiber materials. Four individual 10hp motors will work to keep the plane in the air.
