The trio of designers Leonie Lawniczak, Deniz Örs and Georg Milde have created a concept that would provide magnetic assistance for planes during take-offs. The MagLevAir will function much like the catapult on aircraft carriers; only, the system will use magnets to do the job.
A separate shuttle will aid in launching the aircraft, but it will remain grounded. Its use, however, will mean that the aircraft has to carry less fuel, thus allowing it to remain lighter, or have a longer range. For a system that takes off this way, the average aircraft speeds are a big no, and supersonic speeds are so out of vogue. The designers see the aircraft having a scramjet engine, so think hypersonic.
