LightningHybrids has its contender for the Automotive X-Prize ready, and their concept is interesting, and a bit different from the general solution. For starters, they’ve done a great job in the looks department, the vehicle sources its appearance from the classic ’63 Corvette and modern design cues give it a futuristic look. The biggest eye catcher is of course that the LH4 opens up like a clam.
Power comes from a 90hp VW engine running on biofuel, which is supplemented by a 150hp Rexroth hydraulic hybrid system. Hydraulic hybrids work the same way as regenerative braking does, only, the energy here is stored in pressurized containers in place of batteries. While the idea does hold promise, hydraulic systems are bulky, and have so far been used mostly in delivery trucks. If LightningHybrids does manage to make the system small and lightweight, the LH4 could be on the roads soon.
The carbon fiber body will keep the car low-weight, at just 1,750 pounds, that works well for the claimed 0-60mph dash of 5.9 seconds. The company does have big plans for their car, with plans to have it on the road in 2010, and reach production of 3000 cars a year in the subsequent four years.
