Ford shows new system for PHEV - electric grid communication
Harshpaul | Aug 19 2009

Ford announced that it has created a new “intelligent” system that will allow plug-in hybrid electric vehicles to communicate directly with the grid. The system can communicate wirelessly with smart meters provided by utility companies, allowing the vehicle owner to use the system’s touchscreen to decide and program things like when the vehicle should be charged, for what period of time should the charging continue, and what utility rate should be used.

This means the owner can select times like the off-peak hours when the electricity rates are cheaper. Which allows for greater cost savings to the user, and less load during peak hours for electric companies. All electric vehicles in use by Ford will soon be equipped with the new technology, and it will debut with the Transit Connect van next year.
