While people are looking for ways to get around those annoying tickets, Chicago sent a man 170 of them for no reason at all. Tom Fodder has had the “0” license plate in the family since 1971, and when the city’s department of revenue decided to test ticketing equipment a couple years ago; the man started getting random tickets for no offence at all.
The agency had started testing the equipment using the number “zero,” without bothering to check if that license plate actually existed. And Fodder was overrun with tickets, 170 in all and 77 coming this year alone. He challenged the tickets and reached court every few weeks, for those weird charges. Finally, a newspaper, the Chicago Tribune intervened on his behalf and had the error corrected. Whew!
